This event was particularly special for us. It was one the first in-person gatherings we’ve had since the start of the covid-19 pandemic, so there was a lot of reuniting and catching up with friends, family, and loved ones. Many members of our Pacific Island community stepped forward in support. We were able to host Mana Manahata with our native relatives at the Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration on Randal’s Island. Finally, it was the realizing of an effort, months in organizing and planning, with many covid related setbacks, that showcased and recognized indigenous Pacific Island artists and heritage.

As usual the full event featured a 24 hour event celebrating numerous Indigenous and native artists, musicians, performers, rituals, ceremony, tradition, culture, elderly and youthful counsel, artisans, crafts, vendors, food, and love. We were able to augment the gathering with our Polynesian performances, activities, workshops, demonstrations, and traditional games.

A highlight was the announcement that Indigenous peoples Day would finally be recognized as a national holiday in NYC, an effort that has been years in progress and continues to move throughout all North American tribes.

Some of our favorite memories are the encounters with several people, especially the youth who made an effort to connect with us and share of their experiences as indigenous youth. There was much excitement in discovering how many of our cultural traditions overlap. Many smiles, tears, and laughs were shared.

It was an overwhelmingly beautiful and fulfilling event!
