HEIVA PASIFIKA NYC 2023
Years in the making!
“This has been my dream for more than twenty years!” There has been this sentiment echoed in various ways from the community. There’s have been countless occasions where we have miraculously met other Polynesians in the city and were in disbelief that our paths have never crossed, in fifteen, twenty, or twenty-five years. This was crazy to us, and made it even more urgently apparent that our community needs a space and place to gather. Three years later, Heiva Pasifika NYC became a reality, and we are over the moon with how amazingly it all came together. We are still so emotional and filled with gratitude at the outpouring of love and joy we all got to share hearing our drums and melodies, and seeing our dances live at NYPL at Lincoln Center.
We were blessed to have had fantastic workshops, with talented and savvy instructors. These ranged from Contemporary Polynesian Dance, Ori Tahiti (Ote’a, Aparima, and Competition Preparation), Haka Tonga, Coconut Palm Weaving, ‘Oli (Hawaiian Chant), Hawaiian Ensemble Singing, Tokelauan Dance, among others. Additionally, how blessed were we with dedicated and focused volunteers who offered their time so freely and willingly. We owe it to them for making everything run so smoothly.
Another highlight was the Ori Tahiti competition with solo dancers and groups from all over the world who made the journey to New York City to participate. We know it is a lot to prepare for a trip such as this and we are absolutely appreciative for everyone’s efforts and hard work, and showing up.
There is so much more to unload, and we are happy that event was received so well. We are looking forward to next year and hope more of you will be involved.
Mauruuru Maita’i Tatou!
